A large part of the fun of a cottage holiday is that sense of exploration, luxuriating in your holiday property and taking time to enjoy the hidden gems in the locality. Why not take time to seek out the very best local produce your holiday location has to offer? Britain has a burgeoning legion of high quality local producers dedicated to providing top quality food and drink. This is very true of Britain’s flourishing wine-makers and nowhere is this exemplified more than in the Camel Valley, home to Cornwall’s deliciously crisp sparkling wine.
Thinking about Cornwall may conjure thoughts of sandy beaches, fish and chips and perhaps the odd ice cream or two, but it is likely that wine is not necessarily near the top of your list. This part of Cornwall though (around Wadebridge close to the spectacular north coast) enjoys a clement climate and, coupled with great soil on the banks of the River Camel, modern wine-making techniques mean that Cornish wine is holding its own against more established French champagnes. Indeed, Cornish sparkling wine is award winning and was awarded the prestigious Decanter World Wine Award Gold medal in 2010 and has in some categories even beaten Bollinger! Camel Valley wine epitomises the vibrancy and the quality of Britain’s local producers for whom their trade is a labour of love.
There is a lot to do in this part of Cornwall and many of you will be familiar with the Camel Trail which offers miles of traffic free cycling along the exquisite Camel Estuary. From April until the end of October the Camel Valley vineyard is open to visitors where inquisitive holidaymakers can learn more about British quality wine-making. Tours can be booked in advance and tasting sessions allow you to sample the various wines on offer at this ‘local gem’. Maybe you will recline in your luxury home from home with a glass or two of ‘fizz’ while you plan your next day of luxury?
