It may seem like awards season on the cottages4you blog this week but we recently saw a news item that we think is worth sharing – especially for those who like holidaying with their four-legged friends.
The Kennel Club is the UK’s largest organisation dedicated to the health and welfare of dogs, so when they run a competition to find the most popular dog friendly places in Britain it’s safe to say that the results are probably quite reliable. Alongside the best places for your pet to eat (Highdown Tearooms, Worthing), drink (The Old Sergeant, Wandsworth), visit (Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary, Essex) and even bank (Metro Bank), there was a prize for the UK’s most dog friendly town. And where is this canine oasis?
Keswick in the Lake District.
Nestled amongst fells, woodland and lakes, it’s perhaps not too surprising to see the terrain surrounding Keswick scoring so highly on the ‘perfect for pooches’ list. But what sets Keswick apart from other dog friendly locations is an attempt to create a welcoming atmosphere for your four-legged friends when you enter town.
As Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club secretary, said: “They are reaping the benefits of being open for dogs. The people of Keswick show that they are willing to go above and beyond for their own four-legged friends, as well as those that are just visiting, which is consistent with the UK’s love affair with dogs.”
So not only can you take your dog in a number of pubs, shops and cafes, but you can get a taxi home afterwards – that is, assuming you don’t fancy taking your pet on a woodland walk afterwards!
