Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! 2014 is finally here and it brings with it an abundance of unique and exciting opportunities to enjoy throughout the next 12 months. For example, this year offers the first time you can behold the spectacle of the Tour De France in the very green pastures of “God’s Own County”. (Judging from the interest we’re seeing in Yorkshire holiday cottages in early summer it seems that many of you will be doing exactly that).
Similarly, the Commonwealth Games will be returning to Scotland for the first time since 1986, bringing a wealth of colour and a wonderful air of vibrancy to the streets of Glasgow in July. If you fancy a late summer sporting break in Scotland there’s also more refined competition at the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. Again, interest in summer properties in Scotland suggests that there will be no shortage of people planning on attending each one.
Those who’d rather gaze at a page are also well catered for in 2014 with the anniversaries of two titans of British literature. Shakespeare’s 450th birthday will be marked in a series of events around the UK, but of course it’s the Bard’s very own Stratford-upon-Avon that the most notable events will be staged – including a weekend celebration in April.
The centenary of Dylan Thomas’ birth will be equally celebrated in Wales – especially in the poet’s adopted home town of Laugharne. Described by Thomas as the “strangest town in Wales”, Laugharne provided inspiration for Under Milk Wood, arguably his most celebrated work. In 2014 the town will repay the favour with a number of events in celebration of the life and work of Thomas.
Of course there’s more than enough to enjoy and celebrate in the UK every day, so however you choose to enjoy 2014 we hope you have a very happy and healthy one!
