Feb Half Term Activities

The stunning Warwick Castle

With half term fast approaching this is a good time to start planning your next active half term break. Ever popular, the February break is a fantastic opportunity for families to take time out and to enjoy together precious time spent making the most of a great range of activities on offer this February. If you are stuck for ideas but looking to give the kids a memorable holiday, we are going to take a look at some great options to keep everyone entertained.
Geocaching
Everyone loves a great treasure hunt, combine that with technology and gorgeous scenery and you have the makings of a fun afternoon out and about in the British countryside. Geocaching then is a ‘community’ where you can join and register online, you can then enter a postcode near where you are staying, for which there will be a number of ‘geocache’ options to choose. You will get the co-ordinates which you can use with your technology of choice to help to find the ‘treasure’ (usually a log book to register your success alongside a fun object or puzzle). If you find a geocache and take the object the onus on you is to replace with something of equal value for the next ‘geocachers’.  This is a really popular activity, particularly with the young, that has taken off in a big way so much so that there are an estimated 2 million geocaches hidden worldwide.
Indoor Skiing and Snowboarding
There are an increasing number of indoor snow centres opening throughout the country, reflecting our enduring love of the snow, both amongst big kids and little ones!  With the 2014 Winter Olympics only a few short weeks away, the focus and interest in snow sports is already building.  Extremely popular, you should make sure that you plan your visit in advance to make sure you can enjoy the snow no matter what the weather. Offering both skiing and snowboarding, most centres offer a graduated range of instruction classes to cater for all levels. Venues include:

  • Glasgow
  • Manchester
  • Hemel Hempstead
  • Milton Keynes
  • Tamworth

Eden Project
The most popular visitor attraction in Cornwall bar none, the Eden Project has been open to the public since May 2000 and now is well established as one of the most prominent attractions in the country. Located on the outskirts of St Austell, close the exquisite south Cornish Coast, the Eden Project is spread across a series of connected biomes which houses flora and fauna from around the globe. This charitable enterprise is renowned as a centre for research with many significant environmental initiatives overseen at the site over the past 14 years. Experience for yourself the warmth and lush vegetation of an Amazonian rainforest and during this half term, as well as the fascinating biomes, the Eden Project has on site a temporary indoor ice rink which will close at the end of the holiday. The ice rink is extremely popular and it is recommended that skating sessions are booked in advance to avoid disappointment and disapproving glances from those budding environmentalists!
Warwick Castle
The origins of Warwick Castle date back to the year 914, making this year the 1100th anniversary for one of Britain’s most distinctive castles. To mark this remarkable milestone Warwick Castle has a series of events due to commence during this February half term. The castle itself is a stunning example of our rich heritage for military fortresses. Situated by the River Avon, this imposing structure was a key stronghold for William the Conqueror and latterly various Earls of Warwick. The castle has played a prominent role during some of our most tempestuous years, playing host to numerous Kings and Queens with both favourable and unfavourable outcomes for all those concerned! This is a fantastic day out in itself; a visit to coincide with this half term promises a chivalrous flavour to events with shows, fighting scenes and mock battles to stir the imagination.
Swimming
Indoor pools are of course the order of the day at this time of year, but swimming is the ideal Half Term activity that the whole family can enjoy.  Many of our cottages have indoor pools and of course there is a large selection of properties that share fantastic swimming pool facilities as well as hot tubs and Jacuzzis to luxuriate at one of our cottage complexes. Just roll out of your cottage and straight into a fun packed afternoon right on location! Many also have the added advantage of a games room, gym or other sports facilities. To help you find the perfect property with all the indoor facilities you, make sure you keep an eye on our helpful search filters.
