Enjoy the best UK surfing beaches

With over 250,000 surfers in the UK, it’s an increasingly popular activity amongst holidaymakers. cottages4you has picked out three of the best beaches for surfing in the UK with recommendations of self-catering cottages to come home to after an awesome day riding the waves.

Bude Beach, North Cornwall

Bude beach is a golden sandy beach surrounded by rock pools and green hills. This beach is perfect for surfing beginners, and is a popular location due to the waves along the entire length of the bay. The beach is also ideal for family outings as it caters for all beach activities. Lifeguards in attendance May to September. RNLI Lifeguard service May to September.

Nearby properties:

Wagon House, St. Gennys, Bude

Property Reference: W42059

Whether surfing, walking the coastal path, playing golf, fishing or simply relaxing, this stunning holiday location has something for everyone. The popular resort of Bude with its excellent surfing offering lies just 10 miles away, and has an excellent range of shops and restaurants, many specialising in locally caught seafood, along with tennis, riding, indoor splash pool, bowling and sandy beaches.

Fairchild Cottage, in Woolsery, nr. Clovelly, North Devon

Property Reference: HAAX

Located on farmland in the midst of rural Devonshire countryside, this property is just a short drive away from the villages of Bucks Mills, Clovelly and Hartland. Nearby Bideford is famed for its historic port, weekly markets and boat trips to Lundy Island. Just a fifteen minute drive away is Bude with its fabulous beaches.

Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth, Dorset

Renowned for its clean beaches and safe surfing, fresh winds can create waves in a few hours in Bournemouth, making the coastline popular for a range of surfing styles including bodysurfing and longboarding. Boscombe Pier is Marine Conservation Society recommended and is just 220m offshore from Boscombe Surf Reef – Europe’s first artificial surf reef. Bournemouth Surf School is just 500m from Boscombe Pier, and is the only British Surfing Association Centre of Excellence based on the South Coast, and the closest to London. RNLI Lifeguard Service May to September.

Nearby properties:

Oakleigh, Holt

Property Reference: 23799

This detached holiday bungalow is idylically situated within the peaceful location of Holt Forest, just north of the quaint minster town of Wimborne. Holt Forest and adjacent Holt Wood are two separate areas of ancient woodland which form part of the 488 hectare Holt Heath National Nature Reserve, which also includes one of Dorset’s largest remaining areas of lowland heathland. Holt Heath National Nature Reserve is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest; so this is a wonderfully diverse location for wildlife, walking, cycling and riding. Boscombe Pier is about a half hour’s drive from this property making it easily accessible for a day’s surfing at the beach.

Purbeck Cottage, Wimborne Minster, nr. Poole

Property Reference: W42023

This detached barn conversion is set in a glorious two acres of stunning lawned gardens. Just eight miles away are the Blue Flag beaches at Sandbanks, Poole and Bournemouth, while many coastal walks can be enjoyed in the Purbecks (15 miles), with Swanage Steam Railway, Corfe Castle (NT) and Studland Beach. The New Forest – with its famous ponies that roam freely – is within easy driving distance.

Saltburn, Cleveland, North-East England

Saltburn is a sand and shingle beach backed by a promenade and with a pier. Standing as one of the original centres of the north-east surf scene, great beach breaks can be easily found either side of the pier which work best at high tide and which are well-suited to beginners and intermediates. There is also a surf shop on the beach front which offers the opportunity for visitors to experience the pleasures of surfing, boogie boarding, surf skiing or windsurfing. Lifeguard service May to September, 10am to 5pm.

Nearby properties:

Jasmine Cottage, Saltburn-by-the-sea

Property Reference: W41092

Situated just a short walk from the sea front, this terraced cottage is in close proximity to the headland and benefits from the beach lift to take you down onto the sands. The whole heritage coastline is waiting to be discovered also with Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby all being popular days out.
