Looking at recent entries to Cottage of the Week you’d be forgiven for thinking we’ve only been concentrating on the largest, most grandiose of holiday properties in the UK, Ireland, Italy and France. But in truth we couldn’t help but put The Showmans Wagon to the top of the list once we passed it around the cottages4you office.
This small but perfectly formed character property near Bures on the Essex/Suffolk border boasts a wealth of charm and character. Set in 150 acres of woodland and wildflower meadows, it’s the perfect place to explore and enjoy some of the UK’s most naturally beautiful landscapes.
The area is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts with deer and bird watching amongst many of the activities the surrounding countryside has to offer. There are many footpaths and tiny lanes to explore, including the Stour Valley Path from Newmarket to the sea at Manningtree. Badger sightings are all but guaranteed (you might want to bring peanuts!).
As many attractions as the surrounding area offers, it’s fitting that the biggest draw of a holiday in the region is The Showmans Wagon itself. This former wagon offers a level of charm and comfort that belies its modest size. It’s undoubtedly a perfect place for a cozy retreat for two, but it also offers an additional bedroom to make it equally well suited for family getaways.
You’ll find a wooden floor throughout, two bedrooms (one double, one single), an enclosed garden, electric cooker, microwave and Internet connection. You also get shared use of 150 acres of farmland with unfenced ponds and a BBQ.
