Cottage of the week – The Log House

This is our 100th Cottage of the Week, so we thought we had to offer something a little bit special. We’ve featured a huge array of properties so far, and the only real thing that links them is that we think they’re worthy of the mantle ‘Cottage of the Week’! We’ve had mansion houses, windmills, cosy cottages on the shores of Loch Ness, converted chapels, castles and many more fantastic getaways.

So we thought we might not only struggle to find something that’s unique enough to make the grade but also be worthy of becoming our 100th entry. Then we found The Log House near Betws-y-Coed and our prayers were answered. For anyone wondering how unique The Log House is we’ll offer some of the first few sentences from its description…

“Located just outside Capel Curig and only six miles from Snowdon, the house was built over 110 years ago by a Norwegian sea captain. It was later owned by the Lloyd George family during the 1920s, reputedly used by the prime minister at the height of his powers as a hideaway for himself and his girlfriends.” So, even if you’ve stayed at a property that was allegedly used as a hideaway for a prime minister and assorted girlfriends, we’d be very surprised if it was built by a Norwegian Sea Captain in the stunning Welsh countryside!

Even without this colourful background tale The Log House is a bit special. Set within 25 acres of private woodland, some of the surrounding tracks take you to the top of Alt Goch, where you can find amazing 360-degree views of Snowdonia. Moel Siabod, a 872m high summit (from which it is reputedly possible to see 13 of the 14 highest peaks in Wales on a clear day), can be conquered direct from the house and forms an amazing backdrop to the lower gardens.

With woodland walks, a tennis court, cross country running track, football pitch and outdoor heated swimming pool, The Log House really is an outdoor lover’s dream. But if think exertion and holidays are like chalk and cheese we think you’ll be equally satisfied with a break at this lovely property. There’s a summerhouse (built by former PM Lloyd George himself!), an orchard, a fire pit on the upper terrace and of course, a delightfully relaxing ambience that permeates your surroundings.

Inside you’ll see how The Log House earned its name. The living room offers a large open fire (initial fuel is included – though you won’t have far to travel to find more). There’s also a TV, DVD player, Wi-Fi and barbecue for al-fresco cooking on those long summer nights.

We hope you have enjoyed discovering The Log House as much as we did. If you want to learn more or make a booking take a look at the property’s listing on cottages4you.
