Cottage of the week – The Dovecote Garden

The Festival of British Archaeology starts this weekend and we thought we’d take the opportunity to highlight a cottage that allows guests the opportunity to explore some of the UK’s finest heritage. And while we feature plenty of properties in some of the UK’s most stunning historic areas, our final choice for Cottage of the Week – The Dovecote Garden – goes that little bit further.

As well as being part of a Grade II listed barn, The Dovecote Garden, and other properties situated at Monks Granary Barn, are situated on a farm that was once owned by Alfred the Great. Along with progressive social reforms, and repelling the Vikings, Alfred’s talents obviously stretched to real estate, because he chose a beautiful location to own a property.

Located near the sea on the south coast, in the delightful Friston Forest village of Westdean, The Dovecote Garden is a fantastic mix of historic features and contemporary comfort. If you fancy a historic tour of the location you will also find the ruins of an Elizabethan manor house and a delightfully restored historic farmhouse. And if you fancy more info there’s a free archaeology and history tour for guests.

Other historic attractions in the region include the old smuggling village of Alfriston, Brighton and the historical ’Lanes’, Eastbourne and its Victorian Pier, Pevensey Castle and 1066 Country. Natural attractions include Seven Sisters Country Park, South Downs National Park and Beachy Head.

The property itself offers a fantastic level of comfort to accompany its restored period charms. You’ll find under-floor heating, Satellite TV, Wi-fi and a music system along with slate floors, exposed beams and a wealth of period charms. Move outside and you have shared use of the owner’s grounds along with a BBQ and parking for two cars.

There are plenty of reasons to book a stay at The Dovecote Garden, view the property’s listing on cottages4you for more info.
