Cottage of the week – Lendal Tower

As Heritage Open Days are taking place this week we’ve been given a perfect excuse to choose a fantastic recent addition to the cottages4you portfolio for our new Cottage of the Week. Not that we need much of an excuse to talk about Landal Tower – a stunning medieval property in York!

The idea of Heritage Open Days is to allow free access to properties that are usually closed to the public, or charge for access. We think this is a great idea, but if you’d like to take your exploration of English heritage further then you’re not going to want to leave at closing time! Thankfully Lendal Tower lets you experience a unique medieval living experience with a welcoming level of contemporary comfort.

Set on the eastern banks of the River Ouse, with commanding views over the city, Lendal Tower offers a completely unique holiday experience. The 14th-century, Grade I listed tower originally formed part of the city’s defences and played a key role in the daily life of the medieval city. From here shipping tolls were collected and all traffic on the river was controlled.

The interior décor is as unique as the property and it’s clear that every effort has been made to preserve Lendal Tower’s historic character. There’s ornate, original wood panelling and decorative ceiling plasterwork; a spiral staircase leads from the ground floor living area to a mezzanine bedroom and on to the first and second floors – each of which offers amazing views of the river. Climb a little further and you’ll reach the roof terrace which offers incredible views of one of the city’s many highlights: the stunning York Minster.

There are many more attractions in York, and this property is ideally situated for exploring them all. There’s The Shambles – Europe’s oldest street and home to a fantastic collection of tea shops. There’s plenty more of York’s rich history on display at the city’s walls, and if you’re after dedicated visitor experiences then we’d recommend the Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum. Take a journey out of the city and you’ll find Castle Howard, an amazing mansion with equally beautiful grounds that was the filming location for both the TV and recent film adaptation of Brideshead Revisited.

As a new addition to cottages4you, Lendal Tower currently has plenty of availability over the next few months, though we expect it to fill up fast! Please visit the  listing on our main website for more info and to make a booking.
