Cottage of the Week – Gairlochy Bay nr. Fort William

Not only does Gairlochy Bay offer an enticing mix of rugged natural beauty and unrivalled interior comfort, but it does so in a location so wonderful that we suspect the first thing you’ll do – upon gazing out of the window across to Ben Nevis and the Aonach Mor mountains – is pick your jaw off the floor!

Accessed via a gravelled forest track, Gairlochy Bay’s aim is to allow guests to ease themselves in to the relaxed ambience of their surroundings. Fish from the decking, watch the boats sail through the Caledonian Canal or wander around a network of paths and shoreline from your front door.

The surrounding area boasts a wealth of natural beauty. In fact so rich and iconic are the Highlands and the Western Isles that you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve visited them before. Then again, you may be recognising them from their starring roles in films such as Braveheart and Rob Roy. Visitors can also take the steam train to Mallaig passing Glenfinnan Viaduct – as featured in the Harry Potter movies.

You can also take the gondola up the Nevis mountain range or visit the playground of another iconic character: the Loch Ness monster. If you fancy raising your pulse then nearby outdoor activities include skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, walking, climbing, horse riding, golf and a variety of watersports.

More leisurely pursuits can be enjoyed in a number of beautiful gardens and ruined castles nearby. So rich is the region’s history, and so beautiful is its legacy, that you shouldn’t be too surprised to find that experiencing the tale of Fort William takes up a large portion of your holiday. Equally, so comfortable and so well placed is Gairlochy Bay that you shouldn’t be too surprised to find your exploration of the region doesn’t stray too far from your accommodation.

The beamed open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove, wooden floor, and French doors is the perfect place for all 8 guests to meet up and relax while they discuss the day’s activities (or lack thereof!). The balcony area and Velux windows offer a fantastic vantage point from which to admire the surrounding beauty, but if you’d like a little electronic entertainment you will also find two TVs with DVD players and a CD stereo.
