Cottage of the week – Dorset House

There must be something in the water in Warwickshire, so great is its influence on English history. After all, it was here that Shakespeare was born and raised. The infamous Gunpowder Plot was hatched at Coughton Court and there’s a wealth of history to explore at the Marquis of Hertford’s Ragley Hall (whose son, Sir Richard Wallace, founded the magnificent Wallace Collection in London) along with Kinwarton Dovecot, and Warwick and Kenilworth Castles. And if there is something in the water then a stroll along the Grand Union Canal may be one of the best ways to find out!

If you need proof that Warwickshire has history to spare you need look no further than Dorset House in Alcester. Not only is our new Cottage of the Week located in the centre of this stunning ancient Roman town, with Tudor cottages and historical buildings galore, but it also has its own interesting history…

A large double fronted property dating from the 15th century, Dorset House used to be a brewery. Extensive cellars ran beneath the length of the house adjoining the long walled garden leading down to the River Arrow. Now sleeping up to 21 guests in unrivalled comfort, there are a wealth of quirky period features in Dorset House, including 15th-century stone fireplaces, beautiful antique furniture and beamed ceilings.

Those who appreciate their creature comforts won’t be shortchanged, however, as there are plenty of concessions made to contemporary living. There’s a TV, video and DVD player alongside a microwave and white goods in the kitchen. You’ll find full gas central heating throughout and there’s also free Wi-Fi. You can even have it decorated for Christmas!

All the aforementioned attractions are easily accessible from the property. The picturesque villages of the Cotswolds, the NEC and NIA at Birmingham and Coventry are not too far away and Cheltenham is only one hour’s drive. If you fancy staying close to home then Alcester has an excellent range of shops, pubs and restaurants with a fine museum. There is also a bowling green available by prior arrangement.

If you fancy exploring the history of Warwickshire, or just fancy a large property to escape to with friends and family then Dorset House is the perfect place. Take a look at the property’s listing on cottages4you for more info and to make a booking.
