British Beach Week – staying safe with the RNLI

We are working in partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to launch British Beach Week.

Running from  23rd to 31st July, the week aims to encourage people of all ages to fully explore the nation’s beaches and highlight the boundless opportunities the UK’s coast has to offer.

Last year, RNLI lifeguards responded to more than 16,600 incidents, rescued more than 18,700 people and saved 107 lives on some of the UK’s busiest beaches. To help the beach-going public remember their summer seaside visits for the right reason, the charity is offering the following top safety tips:

1.     Swim at a lifeguarded beach, between the red and yellow flags

2.     Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas

3.     Check tide times before you go

4.     If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help

5.     If you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Those setting out to explore the coastline on their seaside break should particularly keep an eye out for changing tides, to avoid being cut off. Read local safety signs to find out times of high and low tide, and don’t judge the time you have to get back to the beach just by looking at the waterline – the tide can come in very quickly.

Ross Macleod, RNLI Beach Safety Programmes Manager, said: “For those planning a trip to the beach, the RNLI’s advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, which is the area most closely monitored by the lifeguards.

“For anyone who can’t get to a lifeguarded beach, there are some straightforward steps they can take to help keep themselves out of danger. They can find out about their chosen beach before they visit, check the weather and tide times, and follow the advice shown on safety signs at the beach entrance. By following this basic advice, we hope people will have a great time but stay safe as well.”

Our very own Nick Rudge said: “With miles of coastline to explore, many of which are within only a few hours’ drive, the British seaside is the perfect holiday destination with plenty to see and do.

“Staying safe is of utmost priority whatever you choose to do at the beach, so we’re keen to work with the RNLI during British Beach Week and throughout the summer months to ensure holidaymakers can enjoy their break safely.”

Kicking off on Saturday 23rd July, British Beach Week starts with a beachcombing masterclass led by celebrity expert Chris Packham. Why not join us on West Street beach in Brighton, next to the renowned Brighton Pier, for a perfect family day out and a fun way to start the summer holidays.
