101 places to go – the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight may be relatively small (made up of only 380 square kilometres, fact fans!) but when you consider that approximately half of the Isle is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, exploring all of its spectacular scenery can be something of a daunting task. Likewise it may not boast huge sprawling cities but in Bembridge it lays claim to England’s biggest village.

So, if the Isle of Wight proves anything – beyond the fact that the author of the quote revolving around ‘good things coming in small packages’ was completely correct – it’s that a holiday on the island is exactly what you make of it. There are more than enough events and activities, taking place in a variety of stunning locations, to ensure that every member of your party can enjoy a break exactly as they see fit.

We’re going to list a few of the Isle’s highlights but, as always, we’d love to hear your suggestions. If you’ve been to the Isle of Wight please leave a comment below.

• The Isle of Wight may boast a rich and colourful heritage, based on its strategic location the English Channel, but the island’s cultural legacy is arguably the bigger draw. Alongside summer’s huge Isle of Wight music festival there are a number of more niche events, including the electronic Bestival, the Jazz Festival, the Rhymetree world music festival and more.

• If you’d prefer a more sedate exploration of the Isle of Wight’s cultural heritage then we’d recommend a tour of its literary locations. Alfred Lord Tennyson enjoyed the Isle so much that he spent 40 years of his life there. The iconic Tennyson Monument is one of Island’s ‘must-sees’, offering spectacular views and a fitting tribute to the poet. Other writers who lived on and were inspired by the Isle include Dickens, Keats and JB Priestley – more than enough to keep literary lovers busy.

• A tour on two legs is one of the best ways to get a feel for your surroundings. The ‘Walk the Wight’ charity event combines a great cause with a wonderful stroll, while the Walking Festival offers a wide array of treks, hikes, yomps and ambles, taking in the Isle’s many stunning locations.
