In a region as already steeped in history as the Dordogne, it takes something very special to stand out amongst the many stunning historical locations and spectacular vistas. It may be a close-run thing but in the cottages4you office we’re rather partial to the town of Sarlat.
Despite receiving millions of visitors each year, Sarlat is something of a hidden gem in the Aquitaine region of France. And it’s hard not to see why they keep coming, as the town boasts an incredibly well preserved collection of ochre coloured medieval buildings that makes a visit to the town just like stepping back in time.
We think that Sarlat is enough of an attraction in itself, but there are a few things that you should experience on a visit. Have you been to Sarlat? Please leave your suggestion for things to see and do in the comments below!
• Every Wednesday and Saturday Sarlat bustles with a vibrant market that runs the length of its streets. Much like the town itself, it offers a mixture of crafts and old world items alongside a range of more contemporary wares. Make sure you check out the food too!
• One of the best ways to navigate the region is by boat. A canoe down the Dordogne river gives you a fantastic appreciation of the tranquility of the region, along with some fairly spectacular views of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Beynac-et-Cazenac and much more!
