101 places to go – Northumberland
Northumberland offers one of the best mixes of stunning scenery and equally awe-inspiring heritage that you’ll find in the UK. Of course the most notable example is Hadrian’s Wall – as evidenced by new film The Eagle.
However, for reasons best known to themselves, the filmmakers decided to capture their UK based scenes in Hungary. Still, it gives you the excuse to head to Northumberland if you’re after a proper taste of the area, which is no bad thing.
Here are some of our favourite things to see and do in Northumberland.
• While the gardens at Alnwick are undeniably attractive to muggles, the biggest draw for wizards is the fact that the castle appeared as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.
• The Holy Island is a beautiful and tranquil setting, even by Northumberland’s lofty standards. Make sure you check the tides before visiting, however, as the best view is definitely from dry land!
• Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre houses over 60 birds and 28 species. There are demonstrations and opportunities to get some ‘hands-on’ time with all kinds of owls and birds of prey.
