The best family films

There’s nothing better than ending a hard day’s holidaying by gathering on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn and a film. Here’s a selection of cinematic classics; each one guaranteed to delight even the hardest-to-please member of the family.

The Princess Bride

A live-action fairy-tale with plenty of action, romance and comedy, The Princess Bride has grown from a cult favourite a modern family classic.

To complement the witty script and great performances are some stunning filming locations, including the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland’s Country Clare plus Haddon Hall and the winding Cave Dale in the Peak District.

Paddington

Only a few years old and already a classic, families have fallen in love with the adventures of the Peruvian bear called Paddington – not to mention the idyllic London location where the film was set. What’s more, the sequel is as good as the first, if not even a little better!

Labyrinth

Another film that has grown from relative obscurity into a modern classic, this Jim Henson production features David Bowie, Jennifer Connolly, a host of puppets and a whole heap of imagination. Brilliant musical numbers, plenty of imagination and amazing practical effects have kept it a family favourite.

Toy Story

It’s hard to agree on which Toy Story film is best as all of them offer so much comedy, creativity and heart. But the third one is definitely the most emotional – don’t forget to the tissues!

Mary Poppins

Is it possible to watch the musical adventures of the world’s greatest nanny without a smile on your face? We’ve never managed, but it’s safe to say you will have more of a spring in your step once the credits roll.

E.T. the Extra Terrestrial

© 1982 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved

The heart-warming adventures of the world’s cutest alien, E.T. has been delighting families, and making parents’ eyes itch, since 1982. Often imitated, never bettered, it’s the very definition of a family classic.

The Lion King

You can pack almost any Disney film and avoid family disappointment, but for the most toe-tapping songs, engaging story and incredible classic animation you really can’t beat the 32nd animation from ‘the house of mouse’.
