Fun family games for car journeys

grandparents

Family holidays start as soon as you’re in the car, so add a little fun to your journey with the following travel games and you’ll be at your holiday home in no time!

Name that tune

Put a random musical playlist on – the first person to guess the name of the song gains a point. Play continues until they reach a set number of points and win. Then the winner gets to choose the music to play!

Story time

Someone makes up the first line of a story, and it continues in a circle with every member of the party adding a line. Make it harder by including a specific word or item – maybe something you can see out of the window.

The number plate game

Players compete to see who can make the longest word out of the sequential letters on a number plate. For example, ‘SMR’ could be ‘smaller’. Award bonus points for longer words and being creative.

Word association

The first player names an item, then the second thinks of a word that is related to it. Play continues until someone pauses or repeats a word. The last player left wins the game!

The shopping list game

Everyone has to work together to make a shopping list, adding an ingredient each time and recounting the whole list from memory. Fancy more of a challenge? Start in alphabetical order, then try going backwards; skip a letter for the next and so on.

The sign game

tongue sign

Find the longest or funniest place sign name. Look out for the village of ‘Great Snoring’ in Norfolk or the unmistakable ‘Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch’ in Wales!

Who am I?

Everyone chooses a famous or well-known person for the player to be. That person then has to guess who they are, asking questions that can only be answered with ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers.

The car colour game

Each person gets assigned a colour. The first person to spot 30 cars of that colour is the winner.

The quiet game

Players compete to see who can stay quiet for the longest; it’s as simple as that. Perfect for parents seeking a bit of peace and quiet on their travels – bonus points for seeing how many times you can get the kids to play!
